Student Programs

What is Student Programs?
The vision of Student Programs is to be the catalyst for embedding volunteerism into the character of all students in order to develop lifelong habits of service.  We strive to foster social responsibility and learning in order to prepare youth to be engaged citizens.  For more than 18 years, the Volunteer Center has offered programs that encourage, motivate and inspire youth to become active in making a difference in their communities. And youth are involved!

The impact of youth volunteerism is significant for American society:

  • Youth who volunteer just one hour a week are 50% less likely to abuse drugs, alcohol, cigarettes or engage in destructive behavior. (Search Institute, 1995)
  • Youth who volunteer are three times more likely to volunteer as adults. (Independent Sector/Gallup, 1996)
  • 73% of young people think their efforts can have a positive impact on their communities. (Do Something Young People's Involvement Survey /Princeton Survey Research, 1998)

The Volunteer Center works closely with public school districts and private schools to facilitate programs with a special focus on volunteerism and to connect volunteers to unique projects in the community through Volunteer PowerCrew. Through youth leadership institutes, volunteer fairs and service learning, Student Programs engages elementary, middle, high school and college students.

Additionally, we work with high school students through the Bank of America Student Leaders Program and the ExxonMobil Green Team program, as well as with undergraduate college students through the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program.

ExxonMobil Green Team

The ExxonMobil Green Team is a summer youth program that provides paid internships and a study program for high school students. Programs vary from city to city, but all students involved in the program work on a project to better the community in which they live and take part in an educational component.  In Dallas, up to 50 high school juniors and seniors will be selected to participate in the eight-week program as ExxonMobil Green Team Ambassadors.  Students will be placed in teams of three to five and work with local nonprofit organizations to promote environmental awareness or develop environmentally-focused projects.  Additionally, students will take various courses at a local university and participate in weekly reflection activities and educational field trips.

Bank of America Student Leaders Program
A part of the Bank of America’s Charitable Foundation Neighborhood Excellence Initiative, the Student Leaders Program is an outgrowth of their commitment to support the development of the next generation of community leaders.  The program recognizes up to five high school students in their junior or senior years in each designated Bank of America market (including Dallas and Fort Worth) who have demonstrated a commitment to their communities along with strong leadership qualities and an interest in improving their neighborhoods.  Student Leaders are placed in eight-week paid internships with selected community organizations during the summer.  The internships provide students with opportunities to develop and apply their leadership skills through hands-on work experience, while raising their awareness of community issues.

ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program
Each summer, the Exxon Mobil Corporation provides 75 nonprofit agencies in Dallas County with grants designated to hire college interns for eight weeks during the summer. Projects range from planning a fundraiser to writing new computer software programs.  Interns must be currently enrolled undergraduates who have completed their freshman year and will be returning to college full-time in the fall. Students apply directly to the agencies of their choice for the paid internships.

Volunteer PowerCrew
Volunteer PowerCrew is more than students donating time towards a good cause in the North Texas community.  It is a multi-faceted program of students, educators and the nonprofit community all working together to foster the “now” generation of volunteers.  The program incorporates resources for students to learn about volunteering and opportunities for nonprofits to engage creative, enthusiastic and vibrant youth in making a difference.

All aspects of the program come together through the youth web site at www.powercrew.org where students and teachers can develop and maintain volunteer projects as well as search for volunteer opportunities in North Texas.  The web site is the primary resource for linking youth with nonprofit organizations.

The web site includes:

  • Volunteer Hour Tracking Component (reports on student volunteer hours)
  • PowerNews (quarterly newsletter highlighting volunteer opportunities as well as awards and scholarships)
  • Volunteer Project Management for Teachers
  • Volunteering Tips
  • Calendar of Events

 And more…
