January Volunteer of the Month
Filling in the Gaps
Hanna Erickson works tirelessly for All Church Home for Children (ACH), an organization devoted to helping people of all ages during crisis.
Ms. Erickson started working with the organization in 2000, logging a total of 134 hours with the organization in 2006. She sorts through all of the donated clothing and baby items, then organizes them into All Church’s Care Closet.
“Her dedication to this project is huge,” Wendy Spiro, database administrator for ACH said. “It’s hard to find volunteers to do this sort of work. Most people want to work with the children we serve, which we are very grateful for. But we also have other needs and Ms. Erickson is there to fill in those gaps.”
All Church Home for Children partners with children, youth and families to assist their transition through crisis to an optimal level of living. ACH's 19 different programs and services, including crisis intervention and referral, family group conferencing and emergency youth shelters, are offered in nine counties, and are designed to meet the needs of each individual client.
Ms. Erickson also heads up an annual Santa’s Workshop event for children.
“We were noticing a while back that children, for example, would ask for shaving razors or other adult items,” Ms. Spiro said. “We realized that the children were asking for gifts for their parents.”
Prior to Christmas, Ms. Erickson gathers items that kids want to give their parents and displays them in Santa’s Workshop. When the children arrive they receive “Santa Bucks”, which they can use to purchase the gifts.
“Without Hannah, it would be really difficult for us to put our Christmas event on,” Ms. Spiro said. “It means so much to the children.”
