COLLIN COUNTY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

 

Training for Journey of Hope

Journey of Hope Grief Support Center, which provides support at no cost to children, teens, young adults and their families as they mourn terminal illness or death of a loved one, needs volunteers to participate in their facilitator training. Volunteers will learn the best practices of working with grieving individuals. Minimum age to volunteer is 18.

Turning Point

Time: May

The Turning Point Rape Crisis Center, which provides counseling, education and advocacy to those impacted by sexual assault, needs volunteer advocates to provide crisis intervention and accompaniment at Collin County hospital survivors of sexual assault and their families. Volunteer advocates are on call four nights or one weekend per month. Training is a 30-hour program certified by the Attorney General of Texas.  Minimum age to volunteer is 18.

Get Exotic

Time: Ongoing

In-Sync Exotics, which provides a sanctuary for rescued big cats, is looking for volunteers to join their education team and serve as tour guides. Help is needed on both weekdays and weekends. No experience is necessary, and training is provided. Minimum age to volunteer is 18.

Project Independence

The Geriatric Wellness Center of Collin County, which promotes health and wellness of older adults, is seeking participants for its Project Independence program. Volunteers will assist disabled seniors post-hospitalization by aiding with transportation, providing one-on-one companionship, shopping/errand assistance and other duties as needed. Training is provided and the minimum age to volunteer is 25.

Ultimate Home Makeover

Time:  Ongoing

The Heritage Farmstead Museum, which collects preserves ad interprets late 19th and 20th century Blackland Prairie history while making appropriate use of the authentically restored Farrell-Wilson Farmstead, is seeking home improvement volunteers. Volunteers will help with multiple projects at the 116-year-old, 4-acre farmstead.  Training is provided and the minimum age to volunteer is 16.

ReStore Staff

Habitat for Humanity SCCTX (formerly Plano Area Habitat) is seeking volunteers for its retail store, ReStore.  ReStore is a retail store where consumers can find great bargains while helping save the earth. Volunteers will serve as clerks, cashiers, stockers, greeters and other duties as necessary. The minimum age to volunteer is 17.

Good Scouts Wanted

The Heard Natural Science Museum is looking for volunteers to lead natural science activities for scouting groups, helping them to earn badges. Training and a lesson plan are provided. Minimum age is 21.

Retail Sales Help

Time:  Monday – Saturday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The Collin County Committee on Aging, which combats isolation and promotes health, dignity and independence for seniors, is seeking help with its retail thrift store. Volunteers will sort and prepare merchandise, stock shelves, help in the warehouse and provide retail sales assistance.  The minimum age to volunteer is 16 with a parent, and 17 without.

Meals On Wheels Drivers

Time:  Ongoing

The Collin County Committee on Aging – Meals on Wheels, which combats isolation and promotes health, dignity and independence for seniors, is seeking volunteer drivers. Volunteers will deliver meals to homebound Collin County seniors. Delivery times are Monday – Friday 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and are flexible depending on your schedule.  Training is provided and the minimum age to volunteer is 18.

Wellness in Texas

Time: Mondays, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Texas Cooperative Extension (TCE), which strives to provide outreach, continuing education and services to the people of Texas, is seeking volunteers for their Wellness in Texas program. Volunteers will be provided with 40 hours of training in health and nutrition education and in return, the volunteers agree to give back 40 hours of service through TCE in Collin and Denton Counties.  Service opportunities include giving presentations, assisting with cooking schools, passing out information and a variety of other service opportunities. Minimum age to volunteer is 16.

Crisis Line Counselors

Time:  Flexible shifts – training class begins soon

CONTACT Crisis Line, which offers free, 24-hour telephone crisis prevention and intervention, information and referral, is looking for volunteers to train as counselors on their phone lines. They ask counselors to commit to two 4-hour shifts per month, or a total of 8 hours. Minimum age to volunteer is 21.

Language Bank

Time:  As needed

The City of Plano is looking for volunteers to add their names to the Language Bank, which calls on translators to communicate with Plano citizens who do not speak English. The Language Bank has been useful in the courts, police and fire departments, and in translating documents. Languages needed include Romanian, Russian, Kurdish, Japanese, Bosnian, Turkish, Arabic, Portuguese and others.

Bill Payers

Time:  Ongoing, flexible

Want to pay somebody else’s bills for a change? The Senior Source is looking for volunteers to visit the elderly in their homes and help with money management tasks, so clients can remain independent and in their home environment. Help develop a basic budget, sort mail and review bills, write checks for the client to sign, and report to the agency when client appears to need additional support. Minimum age to volunteer is 21.

Child Advocates

Dallas CASA is looking for volunteers interested in becoming a Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children who have been removed from their homes. Volunteers help expedite the court process and help determine the best safe, permanent home for these children. Training is provided, and the minimum age to volunteer is 21.
