The third annual Lone Star Salute! was held November 5 at Eddie Deen's Ranch in Dallas. Each honoree in attendance received the President's Volunteer Service Award, which included a special certificate and pin from President Obama. At the conclusion of the event, honorees were invited on-stage to receive a very heart-warming, Lone Star Salute! from those present.
Cheryl Jackson, a regular contributor on WFAA's Good Morning Texas, inspired our audience by addressing the impact of volunteerism and the difference it can make in the lives of others.
Among the 35 honorees recognized, three very special people were highlighted for their service. Nellie & Charles Bretherick and their special pooch, Charlie, came to us through the ARC of Dallas. Charlie's two back legs are paralyzed but he supports himself through the aid of a specially crafted wheelchair canines and visits adults and children weekly who also have disabilities.
Another honoree, Leo Keiles, is a 96 year-old volunteer at Baylor Hospital who spends the day bringing joy and smiles to patients at the hospital. He rides Dart to the hospital twice a week - if you can believe that!
